Calm breathing exercises, to a rhythm you can see.
With Exhala you do breathing exercises in your browser. You see when to breathe in, hold and breathe out, and so your breathing slows down by itself. That is why it works well for cardiac coherence, between two meetings or before going to sleep.
How the breathing exercises work
- Choose your paceStart at six breaths per minute. Then set the pauses after breathing in and out to a tenth of a second.
- Follow the rhythmA column, wave, circle or square moves along. A soft tone also marks the start of each phase.
- Make it a habitSet a reminder, for example every 90 minutes. The browser tab counts down to the next session.

Frequently asked questions about breathing exercises
Do I need to install anything?
No. Exhala works in your browser, on your computer, tablet or phone. Your settings are also stored in your browser.
Does Exhala measure my heart rate?
No. Exhala gives you the rhythm, it does not measure anything. For regular practice you don’t need that either.
Is this a medical app?
No. Exhala is a tool to help you relax and does not diagnose anything. If you have complaints, then talk to your doctor.
Does slower breathing really work?
Research on slow breathing points to more relaxation and a calmer heart rate. For example, read the review by Zaccaro and colleagues (2018). However, Exhala is not a treatment.
What is the Exhala technique?
You choose how many times per minute you breathe. You set breathing in, holding and resting yourself; breathing out fills the rest of the cycle. That way your pace stays the same, even when you change the pauses.
